Lightning is the most impressive thing electricity does. It is also the least useful. It arrives unannounced, discharges everything at once, and leaves nothing behind but a story.
Most enterprise AI today is lightning. A model demo that stuns the room. A pilot that answers questions nobody asked. A copilot that helps the people who already needed the least help. The energy is real. The work is not.
Current is what electricity becomes when it has a conductor, a load, and a switch. It is quieter than lightning and it runs the factory.
Three things lightning lacks
A conductor. Current needs a path into the systems where work happens: the ledger, the policy system, the ERP. A model that cannot read from and write to the systems of record can only comment on the business, not change it.
A load. Current does work when it meets resistance: a reconciliation that takes a team three days, a KYC file that takes a year. Pick the load first. The model is the easy part.
A switch. Electricity in a building is safe because a person can turn it off. Agents in an enterprise are safe for the same reason. Every consequential action pauses for a named approver until the approval record earns it the right to run on its own.
What this means on Monday
Stop counting pilots. Count workflows running in production under governance. One is worth more than twenty demonstrations.
Put the strategists and the engineers in the same room, inside your organization. The decision about where current flows and the wiring that carries it are the same job.
And keep the switch. Not because the models are dangerous, but because the audit log is where trust comes from.
Lightning is spectacular. Current does work.
